Day 1:-   Ancud and Pacific Penguins

This tour begins with a pickup from the bus terminal in Ancud on the emerald island of Chiloé Grande, an area steeped in history where the Spanish made their last stand in all of the Americas. After a brief introduction to the history and culture of Chiloé over Kuchen (German cakes) in a teahouse overlooking the bay, we’ll depart into the Chilote countryside towards the rugged Pacific Coast of the island.  An area of deserted beaches, quiet farmlands and coastal forests, the rarely visited West coast is a hidden jewel of natural beauty and wildlife.  Our destination will be the unique penguin colony of Puñihuíl, the only place in the world where Humbolt and Magallanic penguins nest side by side.  We will tour the small island colonies by boat, a trip that often encounters many other types of marine life.  After a gourmet picnic lunch of smoked salmon, we will spend the afternoon exploring the rugged beauty of the hidden beaches and countryside of the West coast.  The area is great for nature photography and taking walks along one of the pristine beaches lining the coast.  Activities from hiking to site-seeing to be determined by your interests.  Overnight will be spent with a local family in their charming farmhouse 15km outside of Ancud.

One may substitute a day of sea-kayaking in the tranquil waters of the bay of Ancud and a guided visit to the museum for the trip to the Pacific coast.

Day 2:- East coast Chiloé

After a delightful breakfast of homemade bread and cheeses, you and your guide will drive south to spent a day on Chiloé's protected east coast, quickly leaving the busy Panamerican highway to enter the verdant countryside and rolling hills along the coastal road. This is where traditional culture thrives, with oxen pulling carts laden with firewood, milk jugs awaiting pickup every morning and afternoon and where life revolves around the rhythm of country life. Small fishing villages communities nestled along the coast in protected bays, surrounded by orchards and pastures create an ambiance of peace and tranquility. The day will be spent visiting several of the colorful fishing villages that line the coast and exploring the age-old traditions of the local Chilotes and several of the wonderful wood-shingled churches, many UNESCO monuments that pay homage to their skill. If weather permits, we'll join a local fisherman to explore one of the outer islands where time all but stands still in this living museum to Chilote craft. The night will be spent back on Chiloé Grande with another family in their lovely farmhouse looking out over the protected waters to the snowcapped mountains of the Andes in the distance, where a quiet nights sleep is guaranteed.

Day 3:- Goodbye Chiloé

After breakfast, we will continue up through coastal road making a stop at one of the colorful fishing villages before heading back to Ancud, where the tour ends at the bus terminal.
