Adventure on your own with our maps and itineraries created just for you! Chile is one of the best countries to explore on a self-drive, with the perfect mixture of good infrastructure and stunning places to visit.

Chiloe Island (some days with guide)

The Emerald Archipelago features over 40 islands and has repeatedly been featured as one of Lonely Planet’s and National Geographics most interesting places to visit.  From 16 UNESCO World Heritage Site to penguin colonies, dolphins, coastal hikes and uninhabited beaches and fishing villages the island is like a step back in time where Mother Nature is ever present in human endeavors.

Suggested time: 3-4 nights min

Torres del Paine (with how-to maps)

South America’s most majestic park and one that consistently comes in as the “must visit” place to experience the wonder of Patagonia.  Normally visited on all-inclusive group tours, this self-drive option allows you to have the freedom and flexibility to explore on your own- with an itinerary catered to your interests- from doing some of the iconic hikes, photography options, lookouts and wildlife viewing.  (This option is not only about freedom- but also a more economical way to visit an expensive “out there” place)

Suggested time: 4-6 nights

A person driving oxen on Chiloe Island with a stick in a muddy, rural landscape with mountains and cloudy sky in the background.

Patagonia – Chiloe Loop
(Fjords, Islands & much More)

This route offers one-of-a-kind variety as it starts in Chile’s modern, German settled Lake District and then enters the awesome nature of the Patagonian Fjords (Pumalin National Park) and crosses to the charming beauty of Chiloé Island.   Austral Adventures has explored for the past 25 years in these areas and based on this experience we can help you experience its diversity and beauty as well.

Suggested time: 7-9 nights

This region of majestic glacier topped volcanoes with prehistoric monkey puzzle (Araucaria) trees, hot springs and lakes is home to the ancient world of the Mapuche- the only native group in the world that successfully defended themselves from European conquest for 300 years.   With a local guide you’ll be able to meet an learn from Mapuche communities by visiting local homes where traditional gardens, crafts and foods are made.  The stunning beauty of the region also offers hikes in stunning 1000 yr old forests and hot springs galore.

Suggested time: 3-4 nights min

San Pedro de Atacama (All-inclusive or “on a shoe string”)

The Altiplano of Chile is like visiting another world- the driest desert in the world boasts 6000 meter (20,000ft) volcanoes, white salt flats with pink flamingo dotted shallows, multi-colored lakes, ruins from 10,000 yr old human settlement.  One can visit on comfortable all-inclusive stays with private guided tours or more economically with mid-range hotels and group excursions that visit most of the same sites.
